Check-up step 1 · Money health check

Two minutes to give your finances a check-up

10 simple questions. Rough numbers are fine. You'll see your score straight away, plus the three things most worth improving first.

How are the five areas scored?

Each area scores 0 to 100, and the overall score is the average of the five. The rules follow common rules of thumb and are not an official or industry standard:

  • Cash flow: full marks for saving 20% or more of your income each month
  • Emergency fund: full marks for cash covering 6 months of spending (including repayments)
  • Debt: full marks if repayments are 10% of income or less, 0 at 50% or more; carrying a credit card balance loses further points
  • Protection: having your own medical cover, and critical illness or life cover reviewed in the last two years
  • Money habits: saving or investing regularly beyond MPF, and tracking spending or keeping a budget

Frequently asked questions

How is the money health score calculated?

Each of the five areas scores 0 to 100, and the overall score is their average. The rules follow common rules of thumb (for example a 20% savings rate and a 6-month emergency fund). They are not an official or industry standard.

How big should my emergency fund be?

A common guideline is 3 to 6 months of essential spending (including monthly repayments), kept somewhere you can reach at any time. The tool gives full marks at 6 months.

Does a low score mean I should buy insurance or invest right away?

No. The score only shows where you can improve, and the suggestions are general. Many improvements are about habits, such as building an emergency fund first, clearing card debt or tracking your spending.

Are my answers stored?

They are never uploaded. All calculations run in your browser. So the check-up can carry on from the last step, your score and some answers are saved on your own device only, and you can erase them any time on the summary page.

Important: Results from this tool are for reference only and are not investment, insurance or financial advice. Rates of return are assumptions, not guarantees; investment involves risk and values can go down as well as up. What you enter is calculated on your own phone or computer and is never uploaded.
